Quick Summary: By law, fraud alerts must be renewed every 90 days. While fraud alert management services are not for everybody, many consumers find that it is easier and safer to retain a service such as LoudSiren™ or LifeLock™ than to place and maintain the fraud alerts themselves. Bundled with identity theft insurance and other features, these services offer a great “bang for your buck.” Of particular note, LoudSiren™ offers consumers the ability to receive a fraud alert call at up to three (3) phone numbers while never making those numbers available to anyone viewing the consumer’s credit report. That is something LifeLock can’t do and that you can’t do for yourself.

FAQ's:

  1. Do fraud alerts work?
Absolutely. If a fraud alert is in place, when you or someone pretending to be you applies for new credit and the creditor checks your credit files at the major credit reporting agencies, the creditor will see the fraud alert on your credit report. The creditor is then required to confirm your identity before approving the credit request. If these situations are handled correctly by creditors, the frauds alerts should prevent fraudulent credit accounts from being opened in your name without your consent.
  2. Will a fraud alert harm my credit score?
    No
  3. Can a creditor legally deny me credit because of a fraud alert in my credit report?
    No
  4. Can I do this myself without using a service?
You can request and renew fraud alerts every 90 days on your own. LoudSiren™ and LifeLock™ can both do this for you. However, you cannot keep your personal phone numbers private and receive warning calls at multiple phone numbers without becoming a member of the Identity Protection Network™ available through LoudSiren. LoudSiren™ and LifeLock™ both offer remediation services if there is a problem, but the level of service and details may be different so read the fine print.
